Windshield defrosters have been around for almost as long insides of automobiles have been heated. Rear window defrosters have been around for decades. Eventually, someone thought it would be nice to attach heated mirrors to cars.

Eventually, someone thought it would be nice to attach heated mirrors to cars.

Most heated mirrors attach to the electric elements that control a car’s rear defroster. When the rear defroster is turned on, the heating elements in the mirrors should be active. Keeping ice and fog off side view mirrors allows a driver to more easily see vehicles and other dangers behind him when weather conditions are inclement, simply by applying a small amount of heat to the glass surface of the side mirrors. Electrical elements in the mirrors heat the surface of the glass. The heat evaporates moisture on the surface and melts any ice that has built up. Unfortunately heated mirrors occasionally will heat unevenly or worse yet… Not at all. Replacing the entire mirror head assembly will definitely fix this problem, however that can be quite costly. Why replace the entire mirror, if the mirror is not the problem? It is most likely that the heating element behind the glass surface has gone bad, so why not simply replace that?

Burco Redi Heat® Universal Heat Grids are available in three sizes to accomodate any need.

Well, thanks to our Burco Redi Heat® Universal Heat Grids… You can!

Many luxury car manufacturers install electrochromic (self dimming mirrors) on their vehicles, think Audi mirrors, BMW mirrors and Mercedes Benz mirrors.

These mirrors increase driving safety by eliminating glare that can impair vision. Headlight glare in the mirrors from trailing cars can make it very difficult to see the road in front. This is particularly dangerous on dark rural highways with cross-traffic, and areas where deer and other animals may dart across the road.

In auto dimming mirror technology, a forward-looking sensor detects low ambient light from headlights behind the car and directs the rear-view sensor to look for glare. The mirrors darken automatically in proportion to how bright the glare is, then clear once the glare is no longer detected.

It works via an electrical charge supplied by a low-voltage power supply. The electricity moves through an electrochromic gel placed between two pieces of glass during manufacturing, which have been treated with an electrically conductive coating.

Sounds great right???

The problem is the mirrors have a tendency to lose the auto dimming feature, going black and not reflecting in areas or browning and yellowing around the edges. In some cases they can leak, and the fluid drips onto the paint of the car causing considerable damage to the finish!

Due to the high cost of this mirror, we offer the option of an electrochromic fit over mirror glass. This is a mirror that fits over the old broken glass. The self dimming option will no longer function, but it’s a far more economical alternative to replacing the entire housing in order to get your OEM product to work!

To apply a self dimming mirror fit over is simple. You DO NOT remove the old glass from the frame as these mirror are fused to the frame plate. However you are going to have to make sure that you thoroughly clean the glass that you will be applying the fit over to.

If you have a self dimming mirror that had liquid come out of the mirror when broken, please clean any oils and dirt from the outer surface as this will prevent the self adhesive tabs provided with the replacement mirror glass from sticking properly. Its best to use a power wash to clean the oil out of the frame as this fluid is quite sticky and doesn’t wash away easily. Once this is done you can follow the installation instructions outlined here: Replacing a Broken Driver Side Mirror or Broken Passenger Side Mirror with a Burco® Fit Over Replacement Automotive Mirror Glass. If you have any questions, as always we value your feedback, you can contact us via e-mail from the “Contact” link at the top of the page, or if you prefer to call us we are here to answer your questions Monday through Friday 9 AM/CST – 5 PM/CST toll free at 1-888-482-2279!

Today I want to share with you the fastest, easiest and most economical way to replace your broken driver side mirror glass or broken passenger side mirror glass… And best of all, you can replace it yourself, rather than having the dealership replace the entire mirror head assembly… Im’ talking about Burco® Fit Over Replacement Automotive Mirror Glass of course… Below I have listed the steps along with a simple diagram for replacing a broken side mirror with a one of our Burco® Fit Over Replacement Automotive Mirror Glasses

Burco® Fit Over Replacement Automotive Mirror Glass

The mirror glass is encased or bonded to the inner backing plate which is mounted inside the mirror head.

The broken mirror is to remain in the backing plate, but loose pieces should be removed.

Dry fit (test fit) Burco® Fit Over replacement mirror glass in opening to check proper fit.

Carefully clean broken mirror surface with Burco® Window Glo or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.

Apply Burco® Redi Stick adhesive patches to the back of the replacement mirror and place over the existing broken mirror. If using a silicone or urethane apply directly to broken mirror surface and clamp assembly until cured.

Clean the installed Burco® Fit Over replacement mirror glass with Burco Window Glo® or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.

NOTE: For electrochromic mirror fit-over replacements, the self-dimming feature of the original mirror is eliminated, but its heat feature remains functional. And that’s that! Couldn’t be easier right? If you have any questions, as always we value your feedback, you can contact us via e-mail from the “Contact” link at the top of the page, or if you prefer to call us we are here to answer your questions Monday through Friday 9 AM/CST – 5 PM/CST toll free at 1-888-482-2279!

Jack had purchased a piece of auto mirror glass from us for his 2003 Avalanche and had this to say about his experience…

Hi, I just wanted to drop you a note to thank you for helping me out last week. I went to my local Chevy dealer because I hit my mirror backing out of the garage and busted the glass. I asked them If I could get just the glass for the driver side of my 2003 Avalanche Z71. They replied sure, and I thought awesome! That will be a lot cheaper than buying the whole mirror. Then they hit me with a price of $510.31 for GM part number 88944391. After picking myself up from the floor, I asked if that was for the whole mirror head or just the glass. The counterman said that was just the price for the glass, and to add insult to injury they would have to order it and it would take 7-10 days to get. Needless to say I got the hell out of there and went online where I found you folks at MirrorGlassPlus.com, you had a piece of auto mirror glass for the drivers side of my truck for $28.99 part number BUR-4017S. It went right over the broken glass and attached with the included adhesive tabs. It even allowed the turn signal in the mirror to continue to be used. I couldn’t be happier with the mirror, and best of all I had it within three days! Thanks again for everything, and I’ll be sure to reccomend you to everyone I know! Jack Richards

No… No… Thank you Jack! I’m glad we were able to help!
