Muth signal mirrors can help prevent lane-changing and merging accidents

Thankfully, Muth Mirror Systems has introduced an innovative accessory for vehicles that helps drivers to ensure the safety of their family. Muth signal mirrors use high intensity lights to change ordinary exterior rearview mirrors into safety features that command attention.

When a turn signal is activated, a flashing chevron appears in the corresponding side mirror to alert drivers in the blind spot. However, the mirrors appear as regular sideview mirrors when the turn signals are not activated.

Many accidents are caused by lane-changing, freeway merging or front-to-rear pileups.  Muth signal mirrors are at the eye level of adjacent vehicles and are more noticeable than conventional tail lights.  With the increased popularity of trucks, SUVs and mini-vans and the use of those vehicles for towing, the signal from a side mirror may be the only indication drivers a few car lengths back have of the intentions of the vehicle ahead.  Tail lights may be hidden by these taller vehicles or by what is being towed.

The LED display used in Muth signal mirrors lights up faster than regular incandescent lamps in tail lights.  This accounts for a difference of 17 feet at 65 m.p.h.  By alerting drivers in the blind spot of the vehicle equipped with Muth Signal® mirrors, those drivers have additional reaction time to avoid a collision.

Unlike the adjacent drivers who see a highly visible lighted display, the driver of the vehicle equipped with Muth signal mirrors sees a subtle tell-tale display.  This reminds the driver the Muth signal mirrors is activated.

 These mirrors increase driving safety by eliminating glare that can impair vision. Headlight glare in the mirrors from trailing cars can make it very difficult to see the road in front. This is particularly dangerous on dark rural highways with cross-traffic, and areas where deer and other animals may dart across the road.

In auto dimming mirror technology, a forward-looking sensor detects low ambient light from headlights behind the car and directs the rear-view sensor to look for glare. The mirrors darken automatically in proportion to how bright the glare is, then clear once the glare is no longer detected.

It works via an electrical charge supplied by a low-voltage power supply. The electricity moves through an electrochromic gel placed between two pieces of glass during manufacturing, which have been treated with an electrically conductive coating.

Sounds great right???

The problem is the mirrors have a tendency to lose the auto dimming feature, going black and not reflecting in areas or browning and yellowing around the edges. In some cases they can leak, and the fluid drips onto the paint of the car causing considerable damage to the finish!

Due to the high cost of this mirror, we offer the option of an electrochromic fit over mirror glass. This is a mirror that fits over the old broken glass. The self dimming option will no longer function, but it’s a far more economical alternative to replacing the entire housing in order to get your OEM product to work!

To apply a self dimming mirror fit over is simple. You DO NOT remove the old glass from the frame as these mirror are fused to the frame plate. However you are going to have to make sure that you thoroughly clean the glass that you will be applying the fit over to.

If you have a self dimming mirror that had liquid come out of the mirror when broken, please clean any oils and dirt from the outer surface as this will prevent the self adhesive tabs provided with the replacement mirror glass from sticking properly. Its best to use a power wash to clean the oil out of the frame as this fluid is quite sticky and doesn’t wash away easily. Burco® Fit Over Replacement Automotive Mirror Glass

1. The broken mirror is to remain in the backing plate, but loose pieces should be removed.
2. Dry fit (test fit) Burco® Fit Over replacement mirror glass in opening to check proper fit.
3. Carefully clean broken mirror surface with Burco® Window Glo or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.
4. Apply Burco® Redi Stick adhesive patches to the back of the replacement mirror and place over the existing broken mirror. If using a silicone or urethane apply directly to broken mirror surface and clamp assembly until cured.
5. Clean the installed Burco® Fit Over replacement mirror glass with Burco Window Glo® or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.

NOTE: For electrochromic mirror fit-over replacements, the self-dimming feature of the original mirror is eliminated, but its heat feature remains functional. And that’s that! 1. Remove all existing glass from the mirror head’s plastic inner platform (backing plate). Disconnect old terminal leads from old heating element.
2. Clean backing plate with rubbing alcohol. Clean back of replacement mirror with Burco Window Glo® or other glass cleaner.
3. Apply the Burco Redi Stick® adhesive patches to the replacement auto mirror glass back or to the backing plate itself.
4. Reconnect mirror head’s terminal leads to the Burco® Redi Heat mirrors leads.
5. Align and press replacement auto mirror glass to the backing plate.
6. Clean the installed Burco Redi Cuts® mirror with Burco Window Glo® or other urethane-safe glass cleaner.

1. Remove broken mirror along with the backing plate. If mirror is heated or signal type, disconnect terminal leads. (Tip: Use a small piece of cardboard or other solid item on edge of mirror head when prying off backing plate to prevent causing damage.)
2. Throw away backing plate and broken mirror glass.
3. If heated or signal type auto mirror glass, reconnect terminal wires to new Burco® Redi Set Go mirror glass
4. Align and snap in the new Burco® Redi Set Go mirror glass. Done.
